Re-Earthing Futures 🌱

Saturday at Rio Fernando Park, land-based knowledge came to life through hands-on learning and generations working side by side. 🤲

@tsosie.kevin (Diné/Navajo), Director of Sheep-to-Loom at @futuros.ancestral, made adobe bricks alongside young builders, while Founder Layne Jackson Hubbard shared weaving and natural dyeing with @vista_grande_hs students. Henrietta Gomez baked in the horno as Flowers tended the juniper fire, and Kerry of Hyer Wools artfully sheared Sky the friendliest sheep in the Churro flock, according to Owner Alice of @lapaysannefarms. 🧶🐑

We also celebrated the opening of the KINnection Children’s Garden with Associate Director Nora Corbett of @taoslandtrust introducing artist and @neaarts fellow @carolpadbergstudio.

On Indigenous Peoples Day, we honor the people who keep these traditions alive and the knowledge they carry forward. With fall bringing the harvest, Saturday gave us a glimpse of what we can nurture for the future. 🌾

Presented by @harwoodmuseum and @taoslandtrust, with generous support from @usbank @taoscenterforthearts @taoscommunityfoundation @skitaos and many more. The only thing more rico than the Frito Pie was @chrisjarellano @laila_arellano bros. quick picking heard with the finest @tonefreak66 fidelity!

Fall is settling into the mountains and winter is on its way! Whether you’re planning a fall getaway this October, looking ahead to ski season, bringing the whole crew or considering a longer stay, now’s the time to start planning. Here are a few on our mind (📷 in order of mention):

🏔️ In the heart of the Ski Valley
@alpinevillagesuites is just steps from the lifts, with suites, lofts and vacation homes, kitchenettes, fireplaces in many rooms, balconies, a hot tub, sauna and spa services. Did we mentjon the ski shops downstairs?🫢 Pets are welcome!

⛷️ For a mountain stay
@kandaharcondos offers two-bedroom, two-bath condos with full kitchens, living rooms, balconies and wood-burning fireplaces (yes, fully-stocked piles 🪵!) Can’t get much cozier than tucked into the mountainside.

🏨: Are we there yet?
So close! @elpueblolodge puts you within walking distance of Taos Plaza and Taos Pueblo — and in winter @ridethebluebus 🆓 up to the Resort, just 25 minutes away! An old-school motel with modern amenities, this lodge has impeccably landscaped grounds and droves of Southwestern charm. The hot tub, complimentary chocolate chip cookies and free breakfast seal the deal especially for family travel!

🍷 Southside of Town of Taos
@hoteldonfernando offers a convenient home base to tap into fall festivals, especially with @taosmountainballoonrally launching directly overhead!) With happy hour at Millicent’s Bar & Lounge all October from 4:30–6:30pm, plus holiday event perks and a ski group offer for groups booking 10 or more guest rooms, it’s a sure stay for all seasons. New this winter, groups can receive a $200 dining credit toward breakfast or dinner. To book groups, email Tara at tbagley@shanercorp.com.

🏠 Room to stay even longer

MEANWHILE ON THE MESA…

🌾🔎💐

Every fall, two of @Taos’s most overlooked plants put on a show, but you have to look a little closer to notice. One is a native, one is an invader, and neither will ever land in a bouquet!

🪶 The immigrant: Russian thistle
Tumbleweed is the indisputable icon of the Old West, rarely pictured alive and bursting with color! Hitchhiking in sacks of flax from Eurasia in the 1870s, it rode the R&R west. This one stands a yard+ tall and wide, big for the species. It blooms July-Oct, and its barbs are bracts, leaves shrunk to needle-sharp tips and likely stiffened by lignin. The translucent fringe is the flower’s winged perianth, so thin that low autumn light passes through and lights up the magenta betalains, the beet-pigment family. When it dries, snaps and tumbles off, tens of thousands of seeds scatter. While birds enjoy the seeds, as an invasive species it robs native plants of resources, earning the title by colonizing disturbed ground, drinking scarce water, fueling fires, and shedding allergenic pollen.

🌿 The native: big sagebrush
While many look upon it as a scourge on the landscape, Sagebrush has co-evolved here for thousands of years, and pronghorn, mule deer, pygmy rabbits, and sage thrashers depend on it. It stays evergreen and flowers from Aug-Oct, with wind-pollinated blooms. Its camphor scent is defense chemistry, and damaged plants can warn their neighbors with airborne signals. It doesn’t resprout after fire, so burned stands take decades to return, and roughly half the West’s sagebrush country is lost or degraded. The yellow behind the thistle is chamisa, a native pioneer of disturbed ground and proof that a scrappy colonizer isn’t always an invader.

📍In El Prado, roadsides and graded lots belong to the thistle while intact mesa belongs to sagebrush, so whichever dominates tells you that ground’s history. One untouchable because it’s unwanted, the other because it’s overlooked.

Super Soaker

🌳🍁🏔️😶‍🌫️☘️

Just when you thought the intro-level course was enough to pass, Fall Color 101 became 102! A soggy morning in Taos Ski Valley, golden aspens catching whatever light makes it through the clouds, and a slight chance of flurry (but a chance!) today shows that conditions + timing really matter to earn your color credits. Welcome to fall at 9,000+ feet.

A few things to know right now:

💧 Moisture matters. As we reach the end of September, it’s been notably wetter than normal around Taos, with rainfall already at more than twice the NOAA September average. The Taos 1.6 SE CoCoRaHS station, which compares against NOAA normals, had 2.71” through Sept. 28, or 203% of the NOAA September normal of 1.33”. That moisture, along with temperature, sunlight, elevation and exposure, can all influence the timing and intensity of fall color.

🍁 Aspens change as nights get colder and daylight shortens, revealing those brilliant yellow and gold pigments.

🌼 Blooming sagebrush and chamisa (rabbit brush) add another layer of yellow to the landscape, mirroring the gold beginning to spread across the hills.

❄️ Snow can show up while the aspens are still glowing. At this elevation, autumn and winter don’t exactly wait their turn on the last day of September!

🗓️ Forecasted outlook? When conditions change quickly, the picture can change quickly, too. Based on this morning’s scout, the aspens are beginning to turn, with pockets of gold developing across the valley but still plenty of lime green. The current peak-color window is tracking October 6–10, though timing will vary by elevation, exposure and weather.

🍂 We update our Fall Colors page and information up to the minute, with the latest conditions, timing, trails and viewing tips. 🔗 in Bio!

A Forest in Motion

What if wildfire wasn’t only destruction, but part of a living, changing ecosystem?

That’s the question behind Disturbance: The Art & Ecology of Change, an interdisciplinary project bringing artists, scientists, land practitioners and community together to explore wildfire, ecological change and living with fire in Northern New Mexico. This project of @paseoproject with @del_fuego_project and @foreststewardsguild is possible with support from @taoscommunityfoundation, @hotel_willa and many others!

It began with an open call for artists, followed by a four-day Fire Ecology Boot Camp in April visiting burn areas with fire practitioners, ecologists, foresters, land stewards and community knowledge holders. That research has grown into exhibitions, sculpture, film, sound, performance and participatory projects across Northern New Mexico!

This fall, the work comes to life. Forest in Motion: A Youth Art + Ecology Event, sponsored by @skitaos, brings together student artists from across Northern New Mexico. In collaboration with @twirleye, they’ve explored forests and fire through science, movement and artmaking, creating an immersive experience from charcoal, ash, clay and cyanotypes.

Some upcoming highlights below with full schedule, artists, scientists, partners and supporters at disturbancetaos.org 🔗 in Story.

🌿 Oct 3 | Medicine of Disturbance at Twirl, followed by Medicine of Disturbance + Fire’s First Aid Kit at @hotel_willa

The main Disturbance exhibition continues at @hotel_willa with Disturbance Days in Questa Nov 7, Taos Dec 12 and closing weekend Jan 31.

LOVE YOU A LLAMA ADVENTURE

🦙🎒🍁🌲

2 ways to hit the tail trail this fall:

1️⃣ Give back with a llama-powered trail crew!
Celebrate National Public Lands Day with @wildearthllamaadventures and the @EnchantedCircleTrailsAssociation for a three-day, llama-supported trail maintenance project on the Columbine Canyon Trail.

Volunteers will backpack about 4 miles to camp, then spend 3 days working on the upper 2 miles of trail, clearing deadfall, improving drainage, widening the trail and cutting back encroaching vegetation. ECTA provides the tools and hard hats, while volunteers bring their own food and backcountry gear.

📍 Meet at the Columbine Campground entrance
⛺ Sunday, Sept. 27–Tuesday, Sept. 29
🥾 You’ll stay in the backcountry for the duration of the project.

2️⃣ Just want the llama adventure?
You don’t have to commit to three days in the backcountry to meet these excellent trail companions. #WildEarthLlamaAdventures offers single- and multi-day treks through Northern New Mexico, with llamas carrying the gear while you take in the mountains, high desert, wildlife and scenery alongside experienced naturalist guides. And yes, there’s even “Take a Llama to Lunch!” for a shorter taste of the experience. 🥪🦙

🗓️ It’s a dates! 🔗 in Story for sign-up deets!

🦙 LLAMA 101

New to llama trekking? A few things to know before you hit the trail with your wooly hiking companion:

🏋️‍♀️ They do the heavy lifting. Llamas are pack animals, so they carry the gear while you hike unburdened.

🐐 Sure-footed by design. Their padded, two-toed feet and natural agility make them well suited to rocky, mountainous terrain, while keeping their impact on fragile trails low.

👀 They’re excellent trail companions. Llamas are curious and alert, with keen senses that can make them surprisingly good wildlife-watching partners.

🦙 They have personalities. Wild Earth’s trekking llamas are rescued and rehabilitated animals, and part of the fun is getting to know each llama’s individual quirks.

Sunday Saves

🗓️🍂🚲❄️

As one season winds down, another ramps up! Two annual traditions are on the horizon, both powered by the people who show up, participate and keep the stoke alive. Mark your calendars and get ready for biking to hit the home stretch, while winter sports start gearing up.

🚲 Ride the Rift with @fieldinstituteoftaos | October 18
@fitaos__bikes’ annual fundraiser and community ride brings Taos riders together for a day on the trails, with proceeds supporting youth mountain biking. FITaos has been getting kids outside through biking, adventure and hands-on outdoor education since 1996, building confidence, teamwork and a lifelong connection to the outdoors. Ride, cheer, volunteer or simply come be part of the community that keeps these programs rolling.

⛷️ @taoswintersportsteam Winter ’27 registration | NOW OPEN!
For athletes ages 6–18 with high-intermediate abilities, TWST is about more than competition. It’s teamwork, friendships, professional coaching, confidence and lifelong skills, with athletes training and competing at Taos Ski Valley. Returning athletes get priority, space is limited, and registration opens this Friday.

Two local organizations. Two ways to get kids outside, challenge themselves, find their people and keep the next generation of Taos athletes stoked.

Save the dates. 🤘

Come for the colors…

🗓️🍂☀️🌳🏞️

… then stay for the season! Golden cottonwoods, glowing aspens and crisp mountain mornings await in Taos and Taos Ski Valley, with a host of colorful festivals on the calendar. So what’s your plan? We have a few ideas of where to stay in September and October that make it easy to enjoy art, music, mountain adventures and more this fall!

🎨 @hotel_willa
Begin with an Artist Talk featuring Chris Knowlton on Sept. 17, then come back for their Open House on Sept. 22, 6–8pm, with handcrafted cocktails, complimentary seasonal bites and a chance to explore the hotel. The music lineup brings a distinctly Taos fall soundtrack: JoJo James sets the stage on Sept. 23 with West Texas roots, Americana and Rock & Roll; Colton Sanders delivers alternative country on Sept. 30, inspired by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, the Rolling Stones and Tyler Childers; and Taos-based songwriter Jack Lorang waxes original folk songs and inspired covers shaped by the landscape on Oct. 7.

🌵 @elpueblolodge
San Geronimo Feast Day on Sept. 30 makes El Pueblo a convenient HQ for exploring Taos and experiencing this annual celebration @unescoworldheritage Taos Pueblo.

🍺 Edelweiss Lodge & Spa + Rio Hondo Condominiums
@skitaos Oktoberfest on Sept. 26–27 means both properties are right where you want to be for a mountain weekend of live music, German food and beer, stein-holding contests, pretzel-eating contests and plenty of fall fun.

🎈@hoteldonfernando
@taosmountainballoonrally on Oct. 24–25 brings 35–50 colorful balloons to the skies over Taos for dawn mass ascensions, evening balloon glows, a parade and a grand ball. It’s one of those unmistakably Taos fall weekends you’ll want to experience.

Pick your weekend. Pick your home base. Fall is waiting! 🍁

Before fall, there’s fall migration

🍂🐦💡

Northern New Mexico is on the move. Some birds are headed south for winter. Others are just dropping down from the high country as temps shift and food moves with them.

🌙 The Real Nighttime Highway
Most migration happens after dark, when artificial light pulls birds off course on a collision path with buildings and windows. Last night alone, an estimated 15.8 million birds were forecast to move over New Mexico (@audubonsw)

🚨 Why This Matters for TSV and You!
Millions of birds pass directly over our valley every fall. Their survival depends on what happens down here — dark skies, open corridors, undisturbed refueling spots.

🐦 Fall Migration Snapshot
Ruby-crowned Kinglet — leaving mountain forest for lower elevations
Wilson’s Warbler — just passing through, Latin America-bound
Canada Jay — staying put! one of our favorite cheeky year-round locals

🌲 Follow the Corridors
Even as the forest darkens earlier, birds still need willows, rivers, and forest edges to refuel along the way. Look after those resource-rich spots where the action is.

The bright idea is @cornellbirds’s Lights Out initiative Aug 15–Nov 30. From 11pm–6am:
→ Turn off non-essential lights, especially upward-facing
→ Close blinds and curtains
→ Point outdoor lighting downward

Dark skies are good for stars and birds! 🪽Whether you’re a ski resort or business in town, here in a vacation rental for fall colors or a resident for good — small changes add up. Every dark window means safer passage for feathered friends!
