When you’re strolling our trails this fall, enjoy the golden leaves, their telltale shhhhhh-shimmer and take note of what’s below, too — you may see aspens in a new light!

While once a taken-for-granted pastime amongst some hikers, we now know carving these trees invites infection from bacteria, fungus, and pests that can lead to the death of the tree, and harms the tree’s ability to transport nutrients through its stem.

A tree can heal some minor cuts by compartmentalizing and forming a callus over time, but not unlike a crustacean shedding its exoskeleton, it’s left vulnerable to infestation during healing. Even if the tree heals, these carvings are permanent marks.

#aspentrees often live as long as we do and some even past 100 years. They grow as “clones,” or groups of genetically identical individuals. Some stands of clones are thousands of years old and comprise some of the world’s largest and oldest organisms. Disturbances such as #wildfires or disease usually prompt clones to send up a slew of fresh sprouts. New growth, however, is rare in Sudden Aspen Death (SAD), which scientists have been studying since it was first observed in the early 2000s.

According to @smithsonian mag, foresters noticed the aspen in western CO began to fall silent. While they have always been susceptible to disease and insect attacks, “this was totally different from anything we’d seen before,” says forester Wayne Shepperd. “In the past, you’d maybe see rapid die-off of one stand out of an entire landscape... But now, we’re seeing whole portions go.”

Our region’s extreme drought and temps have increased the trees’ susceptibility to disease and insect attacks — and now new stems aren’t growing back after trees die. In heat stress, aspens close microscopic openings in their leaves as a survival measure to slow water loss. This also slows the uptake of CO2 for #photosynthesis reducing food production. Scientists hypothesize the trees resort to absorbing stored energy from their roots, starving themselves to death and impeding new sprouts.

Let’s do our part to save the trees we encounter #taos with this new knowledge!

Can you spot the litter? We were focused on other things and didn’t until long after the shot was in the proverbial can.

In @taos things are a little different! You may notice many of them on a visit and may leave a little changed, too. It has been been a place that has welcomed experiments in new ways to live, from the traditions of the @taospueblo in living in harmony with the land, to @earthship #biotecture and now even running on 💯 daytime #solarpower, we have a spirit of new days and new opportunities to stay small batch when we can and be better in this expanse of high desert mesa. Not all successful but stimulating new innovations in the right directions!

If you enter on NM 68 you’ll see the #riograndegorge off to the distance to greet you, a constant reminder that we live in a very small slice of time at the surface that began in the depths below long long ago. So… when in Rome… Please take a wide focus, 🚯 and pick some up when you pull over to enjoy the sunrise of a new day with the blooming #chamisa. See you soon!

The beginning of fall isn’t just a welcomed change to our canyons but it presents ideal conditions for trail maintenance!

Join our friends at @enchantedcircletrails tomorrow in celebration of National Public Lands Day to help maintain one of our favorite and most abundantly watered trails for flowers, birds and all matter of very overgrown foliage, Yerba Canyon trail. They don’t call it Yerba for nothing!

It’s a true #volunteer effort so you gotta come prepared and watered yourself — we recommend a light pack with water and lunch or enough of your preferred snacks to carry you over. Bring gloves and eye protection, and wear your go-to hiking boots, with long pants and sleeves (we love thorny on the mesa and roses abound up here!)

National Public Lands Day is an opportunity to connect with nature, foster community, and inspire enthusiasm for the environment.

@skitaos’s annual #oktoberfest extravaganza returns this Saturday and Sunday, September 16-17 to #Prost autumn’s arrival to our alpine village … just as first flurries fly over our majestic peaks!

Traditionally celebrated in mid-September to welcome the new season, the world's largest beer festival and carnival originated in the German state of #Bavaria and runs to around the first Sunday in October, with more than six million international and national visitors attending the event! Locally, it is called d'Wiesn, after the colloquial name for the fairgrounds, Theresienwiese. Oktoberfest is an important part of #Bavarian culture, having been held since the year 1810.

So when and how to partake in #taosskivalley and of what events exactly? There is a ton going on and we’ve compiled it all in one place. FOREST PSA: Highway 150 Wildland Urban Interface Project!

Carson National Forest has much end of summer work happening thanks to wet weather! Here’s what you need to know now:

You may have noticed downed timber this week along the NM 150 roadside. In a Good Neighbor Agreement with Taos County, CNF is thinning and piling in areas between the highway and wilderness between Valdez and #taosskivalley. If weather conditions line up, they may be burned this winter.

Spanning 871 acres of thinning and prescribed fire, the goal is to protect the watershed and only entry/exit road to TSV by reducing the risk of insect and disease infestation that would result in large-scale tree mortality and fire hazard.

In 2014 local organizations came together to create the Taos Valley Watershed Coalition with CNF, @nature_org, @nmgameandfish, NM State Forestry, @skitaos, @taoscounty, @taospueblo, @villagetsv, @TownofTaos, @troutunlimited, Taos Soil & Water Conservation District, @nmwildlifefed, El Salto de Agua Land Association, and several #FireWise Communities.

Beside the road, the Rio Hondo runs toward the Rio Grande, providing miles of wildlife habitat, fishing and feeding domestic and agricultural water. The highway in Hondo Canyon bridges 2 forest ecosystems amid a riparian corridor. #ponderosapine and dry-mixed conifer at lower elevations give way to wet-mixed conifer and spruce fir above. Aspen is patchworked throughout. Insects like western balsam and spruce beetles are naturally present. Tree stands can usually withstand outbreaks but combined with drought, #silviculturists have found signs of increased tree mortality.

Part of the 1.5M acre Enchanted Circle Landscape, the project began in 2019 and is one of the major efforts under the Wildfire Crisis Strategy to address the highest at-risk US firesheds. Outside the forest boundary, the Village is working with NMSF and private landowners on similar treatments. The long-term success of such land treatments depends on the staunch #coalition of partners execute across all boundaries.
