Its largest site, the Taos Mesa Solar Array, spans 170 acres and houses 43,680 panels. These efforts have helped reduce member electricity bills by 30–35%. Beautiful weekend in the @skitaos neighborhood! 📍Williams Lake Trail
In anticipation of National Trails Day this coming Saturday, we got a jump start with a TSV classic and local favorite on the backside — looks like we weren’t the only ones with the idea! This 3.7-mile out-and-back trail winds through alpine forest and rocky terrain to reach stunning Williams Lake, nestled at nearly 11,000 ft elevation. Expect a steady, moderate climb with about 900 ft of elevation gain — totally doable with some breaks and plenty of water. Along the way, you’ll pass through shady evergreens and into the gorgeous Wheeler Peak Wilderness. 🏠: Our Visitor Chalet will be open Friday-Monday, 9am-2pm — switching to daily on June 6! 🏞️ At the top: a crystal-clear glacial lake framed by rugged peaks and summer wildflowers. Stroll, picnic, or just breathe in the fresh alpine air. 🐾 Dogs welcome, though some areas may require a leash. 🛻 The trailhead is about 2 miles above the Taos Ski Valley base area via Twining Road — use Hiker Parking to benefit from the trail signs and info by @enchantedcircletrails — or continue down the road to The Bavarian Restaurant’s lot. 🏔️ Fun fact: Williams Lake sits in a historic mining area — look closely and you might spot remnants of old mining activity on the east side of the lake. 🐾 Wildlife: In summer, you might spot marmots, mule deer, and the occasional elk — so keep your eyes (and ears) open and give wildlife plenty of space. We saw rock squirrels and chipmunks on Sunday, as well, and plenty of birdies! 🏕️ No campfires or camping along the lakeshore — help preserve this stunning spot! But 300 ft away is fine 😁 Best hiked Now–September when the trail is clear and the views are unbeatable. $Summer skies 🌦🌈 So much high drama this week heading up to #TaosSkiValley, a sprinkle of what we hope bodes well for much-needed moisture reaching the ground all over! 🔍 Virga is rain or snow that falls from a cloud but evaporates before it hits the ground. It appears as streaks or wisps under clouds—common in dry, high-elevation regions like #NorthernNewMexico. 📖 DYK the word “virga” comes from Latin, meaning “branch” or “twig”—a nod to its wispy, branch-like appearance!? 🌈 Even when rain evaporates midair, sunlight still refracts and reflects inside falling drops, creating rainbows—especially near sunrise or sunset, when light is rich and low. ⛰️🏜️ Virga forms when elevation is high (like the Taos Plateau), surface air is dry and conditions are unstable (spring, fall, or monsoon season.) 📊 Virga is beautiful but also a visible reminder of how much moisture doesn’t reach the ground—critical in arid regions.
