LA to Taos is currently on view in the Peter and Madeleine Martin Gallery, an exhibition highlighting artists of the vibrant art scene of 1960s Los Angeles: Larry Bell, Ron Cooper, Ronald Davis, Ken Price, and Ed Ruscha.
Between 1970 and 1990, these artists relocated from Los Angeles to Taos, New Mexico, where they lived and worked for the next four decades. Despite, or perhaps because of, Taos’s remoteness and calm, each had late-career success. Ed Ruscha spent generative time in Taos over many years and created works of art with this group and other Taos artists. These artists defied and reinvented boundaries, from Bell and Cooper’s perceptual investigation of light and space to Davis’ reworking of the digital media and Price’s unusual ceramics and neon-soaked prints.
