It’s about time

🌄🏔️🎿🎨🐐📷

Whether in snow, paint, or film, Kachina Peak has left a lasting impression across generations, no matter what the medium of expression, since Ernie Blake first flew over it in his Cessna in the 1950s. Our 12,481‑foot crown jewel of Taos Ski Valley is now open @skitaos for hike-only, with each first summit of the season an annual pilgrimage meaningful to so many in our community!

Long before lifts supplanted hiking as the primary means of ascent, Blake and early ski pioneers tackled steep fall lines with precision and respect for the terrain. Those same fundamentals — balance, patience, reading snow, honoring line — still guide movement across Kachina today. Legacy is earned, step by step and turn by turn.

Like @Taos and our magical light, Kachina itself has long inspired artists. @woodallfineart’s oil paintings and thick brushstrokes distill the mountain into bold color fields bound by light and shadow into essential, evocative forms. Gus Foster’s panoramic photography, exhibited @harwoodmuseum, expands that vision. Using antique large-format cameras, innovative darkroom techniques, and Billie goat-hauling equipment up the mountain, Foster created some of the first sweeping compositions of Northern New Mexico’s now legendary ridge lines. His images preserve the mountain’s scale, echoing the physical and spiritual ascent of Kachina.

Foster and Woodall’s work ensure these landscapes endure; that Kachina Peak’s terrain remains both teacher and canvas — a place where legends converge!

@snowboardtraveler’s rider-led overview of TSV in its powder glory is just the kind of stoke we are feeling as this weekend’s storm approaches! 🙏 And if it’s your first time visiting, consider this a perfect primer before you drop in!

This deep dive into @skitaos explores steep chutes, long bootpacks, and our one-of-a-kind laid-back Southwest experience! As one of North America’s most technical ski resorts, with over half the terrain rated advanced, our mountain draws riders who come specifically for the steeps — but there’s plenty of room to chill and play for beginners too! Their visit covers snow conditions, lift access to hike-to-terrain on the ridges and #kachinapeak, frontside vs. backside riding, and what makes TAOS a true haven for expert skiers and snowboarders!

With free parking at the base area (plus some closer paid options), you can grab a breakfast burrito from @cidsmountainmarket and a coffee from Black Diamond Espresso and be on your merry way. Always a treat to get to see the northern lights this far south! 367 frames timelapsed from approx 7:30–11:30pm last night. The Garmin Fēnix recorded Eric’s top speed at 68 mph. @noaa reported severe space-weather conditions on January 19, driven by an X-class solar flare and an Earth-directed CME. Activity reached S4 (Severe) on the solar radiation scale with geomagnetic storm levels up to G4 / Kp ~8, strong enough to enhance auroras well into mid-latitudes. And @davisinstruments Earth-weather was just right!
