Our hit list of which shops to hit for the latest and greatest #snowsports gear is a short but mighty one! With @skitaos one week out from opening on #Thanksgiving Day, we made the rounds at local outfitters to check out this year’s new skis, boots, apparel, and more.

Slip into the darkside and the light @millicentrogersmuseum’s meticulously curated contemporary wormhole into a prescient dimension, that of Venezuelan-born painter Luchita Hurtado.

The fact that she spent the majority of her career largely unrecognized as an artist by the public — including those who knew her while she lived in Taos — is reason alone for the curiosity and inquiry explored by “Channeling Luchita: A Community Response to the Life and Work of Luchita Hurtado,” a new show responding to and now a companion of the @HarwoodMuseum’s “Earth and Sky Interjected.” These bedfellows can be enjoyed as a conversation, both fitting prequels for the ongoing experience of life past, present and future that Hurtado examines through themes of the body, perception, ancestry and humankind’s connection to the planet.

Presented in collab with @taosabstractartistcollective, 10 New Mexico artists were chosen in an array of mediums from textile to digital, paint to woodworking and asked, “How do you connect with Luchita or her work in your artistic practice?”

For craftsman Dean Pulver, his wood sculptures are deeply connected to themes explored by Hurtado, “particularly her focus on the interconnectedness between body, landscape, and cosmos. Like Hurtado, my aim is to bridge the personal and universal through my work, creating a dialogue between inner experiences and the broader natural world.” Her ability to blur boundaries and reflect unity is conjured by Pulver’s use of organic forms and patterns to “capture a sense of continuity between human and natural elements.” A reverence for the environment flows through his work, and his process involves shaping materials in ways that evoke interconnectedness.

Intimate and universal, captivating and stimulating, and grounding, it is effective in its conception, ultimately eliciting a response from the viewer to complete the arc of the experience.

Come for the pizza, stay for the everything else!

@taostaproom in town is known for its special wood fired pies and of course the full line up of its @taosmesabrewing beers (24 taps in all —usually 3 of them are ciders from @tractorbrewing.) When you get a taste of the rest of the menu it’s hard to resist straying from your usual order!

This weekend, we are craving the supa fresh and pretty to look at Ahi tuna crudo. Yeah, and pizza and beer!

Here are some tips before you go!
- Happy hour at the Taproom is 3-6pm every day (!!!) and there is a special happy hour food menu Mon-Thurs and Sun.
- For Football Mon and Thurs from 3-9pm and Sunday All Day enjoy $1 off beers with the happy hour food menu.
- Order to-go by calling (575) 758-1900. There is an online option, too.
- Parking if the lots are full or we have the best problem of snow… def use the old Tuesday Morning lot across the street!

When the first snows arrive to #TaosSkiValley, and we get excited for those first turns on the slopes, someone else is dusting off sticks of his own!

“For a ski valley painter, when the snows of November come, it’s time for the half gloves, so you feel your fingers on the brush but don’t freeze your hands!”, Pat Woodall explains. “The oil paints don’t freeze either. That’s the key to make the magic happen of my ski paintings!“

No one knows how to capture the particularly special sheen of our most beloved lines quite like @woodallfineart. From Al’s Run to The Bavarian’s bustling deck l and glow of New Year’s Eve celebration on the snow, the very place itself is the occasion.

With winter #snowscapes, he wants to paint the way you feel in your car on the way to Taos Ski Valley. “Like you are going to the most amazing ride of your life but first, you gotta ask the mountain!”

To build anticipation and portray the excitement of movement, he goes for light and shadow, snow textures, boarders, markers, and skiers on the bumps, at the base, or on the Kachina chair.

“Probably they are licking their lips like I am!”

Pat’s love of TSV and time spent living the experience of our mountain over many years give him a unique ability to capture its iconic scenes as we remember them… and the pasttimes that define a winter season here. The imagery he is able to portray is so evocative that the emotion conveyed can transport us to a memory so vividly as if we are there again — whether or not it is that special time of year.

Today we celebrate the start of American Indian Heritage Month and Day of the Dead with a remembrance. We learned on a recent visit to @whitefeathertours’s Morningtalk Indian Shop at Taos Pueblo that the past is alive and well and beckoning to you discover it.
