Women-owned businesses continue to fuel the economy, representing 39.1% of all businesses – over 14 million – employing 12.2 million workers, and generating $2.7 trillion in revenue according to a 2024 study from the financial industry using census bureau data. Hard times, no prob. Whether it was during COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 or supply chain disruptions throughout the pandemic, women business owners are continuing to drive economic growth across multiple critical sectors.

From 2019 to 2023, women-owned businesses’ growth rate outpaced the rate of men’s 94.3% for number of firms, 252.8% for employment, and 82.0% for revenue. During the pandemic, women-owned businesses added 1.4 million jobs and $579.6 billion in revenue to the economy.

A ridge runs through it 🗻 Full open hike to terrain for a good cause!

Congratulations to all the 29th annual @ridgeathon participants who crushed some early spring skiing on as much repeat 🔁 as they could yesterday and Friday to raise $56,855. It was a sight for sore eyes for sure to see Kachina opened for the occasion!

Founder and Extreme Ridge Challenge competitor Mugzy peaked the leaderboard with 57 contributions totaling $11,557 surpassing his goal of $10K.

“Skiing is fun! Raising funds with the Taos Community Foundation is fun. Doing both at the same time is the best! Join me on the slopes or by donating or both! 29 years of success. Lets GO!”

Kent from @edelweisslodgeandspa also topped his pledge of $3,000, “While the snow may not be that great this year, the cause is always great. Community health care issue could never be more important to me than today. I don’t think I will be doing many hikes this year, but hope to “drag” my son with me this year for his first ridge a thon (and my 19th)!”

Each year Ridge-A-Thon participants and donors help encourage donations for the Emergency Medicine Fund @taoscommunityfoundation. The Fund provides grants in the area of health and basic needs in Taos and western Colfax Counties.

Can you identity some features on our southwestern horizon that zapped into sharp contrast in last night’s sunset? There are a few notable ones with more than meets the eye!

Jemez Mountains 1️⃣ Along with the #sangredecristomountains that we call home, 35 miles distant across the #RioGrande valley, the Jemez Mountains form the southernmost tip of the #RockyMountains, a range stretching over 2,000 miles north into Canada. Anchored by Los Alamos, its largely undisturbed forested wilderness contains rocky peaks, meadows, streams, lakes and waterfalls, and unusual features resulting from past volcanic activity, including hot springs, sulphurous vents and a large caldera - a ring of hills comprising the remains of several long-extinct volcanoes! The Valles Caldera National Preserve was born from eruptions 1.2-million years ago! All the mountainous area forms the Jemez Ranger District of the 1.6 million acre Santa Fe National Forest, and is home to the Jemez Historic Site, which protects the ruins of a Spanish mission and a Native American pueblo.

Cerro Pedernal 2️⃣ While at this angle you might perceive a flat topped mesa or skinnier butte, this rock formation adored by Georgia O’Keefe isn’t round and flat on top! The raven’s eye view reveals more of a hill with a distinct ridge line. Locally known simply as “Pedernal” (Spanish for “flint hill” and in Tewa “Tsip’in”), this narrow #mesa lies on the north flank of the #JemezMountains, south of Abiquiu Lake, in the Coyote Ranger District of the #SantaFeNationalForest. The caprock was produced in the Jemez Volcanic Field - its highest point sits at 9,862 ft.

#georgiaokeeffe painted #Pedernal at least 28 times, primarily between 1936 and 1958. Her work on the mountain is considered a series of personal reflections and meditations. She called it her “private mountain” and joked that if she painted it enough, God would give it to her. It followed that she would have her ashes scattered there.

The creased and crinkled badlands, polka-dotted with scrubby piñon and juniper, offer a different view of place and perspective in time, with the Jemez Mountains looming enormous and sun-streaked on the western horizon.

Did you know that our high desert soil is alive?

When you have been out enjoying the parks and public lands of the American Southwest, you’ve probably noticed patches of bumpy, clumpy, darkened soil as seen here on the @mypubliclands Rift Valley Trail system yesterday as we await the incoming snow storm 🌨️ !

Although the soil surface may look like just dirt, it is full of living organisms that are a vital part of the desert ecosystem! This veneer of life is called a biological soil crust. Communities that make up soil crust include lichen, mosses, green algae, microfungi, and bacteria, dominated by cyanobacteria. Like our skin is to the body, it’s one of the most important organs of our desert ecosystem protecting it and the organisms big and small that live here.

🏜️ Soil crust helps control erosion by keeping soil stuck together in one continuous layer. This helps keep the sandy soil from washing away in the rain or blowing in the wind. It also helps plants grow by increasing water retention and improving soil fertility.

🏜️ They create nutrients and help grasses and shrubs take root.

🏜️ They perform important ecological roles, such as carbon and nitrogen fixation.  
How can you help protect them? 🤎 Stay on designated roads and trails - it’s tight when passing on single tracks, so lean your bike on the sagebrush at the edge of the trail and find a durable surface like rocks or sand to step on.

They can take years or decades to recover! In the meantime the ground can become vulnerable to erosion, flooding, and dust storms — and non-native plants can take over the area.

Next time you’re out and about in our year round playground, remember, look for the daylight moon, follow the #raven #redtailedhawk dances, listen for the #piñonjays and DON’T BUST THE CRUST! 💙🌝🤎
