Our Location

We are located an easy drive from the Town of Taos, which sits at the base of the mountains. It takes about 30 minutes to drive from Taos Plaza to the Ski Valley, passing through historic villages and mountain canyons. The area’s early ski pioneers, residents, and employees blended their love of skiing with the local Native American and Spanish cultures to craft a mountain retreat out of an old mining town. Over the years, Taos has become world-renowned for steep runs of powdery, dry snow in the winter and stunning forest surroundings in the spring and summer.

With unprecedented access courtesy of JSX, visitors from Texas and California can fly directly to the Taos airport, instead of flying into Santa Fe or Albuquerque.

En-lightning ⚡️⛈️⚡️ 📷: @ottoseneric, 7.2.25 @ 9:20pm Zap! It’s your annual lightning season PSA! The storms are upon us. Use these safety tips from trusted sources (NOAA, NWS) as you camp, hike, bike and raft this summer. Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the atmosphere. It can occur:
- Between the cloud and the ground (cloud-to-ground lightning)
- Within and between thunderstorm clouds (intra- and inter-cloud lightning)
A Side Flash occurs when a tall tree or structure is struck and some of the current arcs onto other nearby objects on its path to ground. This causes 35% of lightning fatalities and explains why seeking shelter near a tall object is not necessarily safe. What to do before heading outdoors:
-Time activities with local weather patterns. Check the forecast before. Monitor while outside.
-Set turnaround times that will get you off higher terrain or water before the storm. Turn back/get out earlier if you hear thunder or see lightning.
-NOAA is at Weather.gov. We love the Windy app for its extremely detailed meteorological data even convection 🌩 While you’re out:
-Select tent sites in safer terrain. A dry ravine or other big depression. Avoid peaks, ridges, plateaus, open areas and being near taller trees that rise above others.
-Take shelter at the first sign of thunder or lightning. Wait 30 minutes after to resume activity.
-If you can’t get to a safe structure, move to safer terrain. Dense areas of smaller trees surrounded by larger ones or lowlying areas (valleys, ditches) but watch for flooding.
-Reduce contact with the ground. Put feet together, stand or sit on a pack w/o metal or crouch.
-Get to shore before storms arrive. Water does not attract lightning but is a conductor. If you have access to a safe structure, get inside.
-a modern building (wiring and plumbing act as an earth ground) Don’t use appliances or plumbing. Avoid contact with concrete which may have metal bars inside.
-a fully enclosed, metal-topped vehicle, windows UP, electronic devices OFF.
DON’T:
-Shelter in sheds, pavilions, tents, porches
-Lay flat on the ground
-Stand under a rock overhang or in a cave opening

Fiery first light 🌕🐦‍🔥🌄 Waking up to a deadly beauty of a red sunrise and smoky moonset in @taos this morning. Winds overnight carried in smoke from multiple wildfires across the state—especially the Laguna Fire in Rio Arriba County (~4,800 acres), which is pushing visible smoke into the Taos Valley. Further south, the massive Trout and Buck Fires are burning tens of thousands of acres and adding to the regional haze of aerosols that scatter light in the atmosphere, painting our skies in reds, oranges, and purples. We are so so lucky #TaosSkiValley air quality is Good to Excellent today, a great time to head to the mountains for outdoor time especially if you’re sensitive. #Taos #AQI is fluctuating from Good to Moderate, with brief spikes in particulate matter (PM2.5) especially in the afternoons. While we’ve had some great monsoon activity so far this season, high temps, low humidity, and dry fuels make every summer fire season here in New Mexico, especially as climate pressures and drought conditions grow. Wild asparagus? Cabbage patch? 🏜️🧡☀️ Bursting onto the summer Seasonal Matrix scene today is way wilder than you can imagine up close and #happeningnow if you’re lucky to spot one on rocky, lower-elevation zones like the Rio Grande Gorge or exposed desert slopes below the forest line... The elusive Century Plant, Agave americana with one of its choice pollinators, Rufous Hummingbird — a High Desert Synchrony for the ages! Native to the arid regions of the Desert Southwest and northern Mexico, Agave americana—often called the century plant—is a monocarpic succulent, meaning it flowers only once at the end of its life cycle, which typically spans 10 to 30 years, not a century. 📜 Its dramatic nickname likely arose from early European observers who mistook its long dormancy and sudden towering bloom as a once-in-a-lifetime, century-long event—a myth that stuck! In northern New Mexico’s high desert margins, especially along sun-exposed rocky outcrops and south-facing slopes, this agave thrives in poor, well-drained soils. When environmental conditions align—mature age, moisture, temperature—it sends up a flower stalk up to 25 feet tall, blooming from late June through July. This timing is no coincidence! The bloom overlaps precisely with arrival southbound of the long distance migrant, rufous hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus), which breeds as far north as Alaska and winters in Mexico. These birds rely on the nectar-rich tubular flowers for fuel, while pollinating the agave in return. Snags are used by other birds for seed caches! This is co-evolution in real time—an alignment of life cycles shaped by drought, altitude, and instinct. 👉 While Agave americana is not uncommon in the Southwest, keep your eyes peeled for its unfurling bloom, rare and short-lived, often unfolding just once in a generation. Seasonal Matrix: Summer’s High-altitude bloom alert! ⛰️✨ Columbine flowers (Aquilegia spp.) are lighting up the summer trails across northern New Mexico. These delicate yet resilient wildflowers thrive in cooler mountain zones—typically above 8,000 feet—in USDA climate zones 4–6. 🌸 Look for them from late June through August in shady forests, streambanks, and alpine meadows, especially around the Sangre de Cristo and Jemez ranges to our southwest. Early summer brings the classic blue & white Rocky Mountain columbine, while the rarer red columbine blooms later—mid to late summer—in moist, sheltered spots. 🌿🐦‍🔥 These blooms are vital for high-elevation ecosystems, offering nectar to hummingbirds, hawk moths, and native bees—and helping to keep our mountains buzzing.
